Los Milenios: A Powerful City Icon On The Malecón

By

The beauty of the Puerto Vallarta boardwalk continues to be one of the main attractions of this tourist destination, at the same time, the length of the boardwalk has been changing over the last decades. The most noticeable changes have to do with its embellishment and especially with the powerful bronze sculptures that have been erected there. Several local artists and other contributors have placed these works of art along the boardwalk, which have become very popular as everyone seeks to take a photo next to them.

On this occasion, however, we want to talk about a sculpture in particular: Los Milenios by the sculptor Mathis Lidice, located near Hotel Rosita, a place where fishermen used to come to unload their catch. It is right at the beginning of the boardwalk and is the start of many other symbolic sculptures along what is now also an artistic route along the bay.

The work rises in a spiral that symbolizes the unattainable journey of time, DNA, history and the celebration of the arrival of the new millennium. In its phases or turns we find characters such as Netzahualcóyotl, the poet king of pre-Hispanic times. Also present is the feathered serpent, Quetzalcoatl, who is a source of wisdom and who in some way marks a link between the second millennium and the third.

Right in the center of this impressive work you can see the image of Charlemagne, founder of Europe, alluding to the instability and turbulence of the first millennium. There are also hands in the form of prayer as a tribute to Christianity and the faith of humanity.

The work as a whole is very interesting and you can easily understand its logic or what the artist wanted to convey through it. Although of course, any description on our part is nothing more than an attempt to find the most sublime interpretation of such a feat by the artist. The truth is that Los Milenios is a sculpture worthy of being admired by everyone, both locals and tourists. Since its value lies in the celebration of life and the course of humanity in history through transcendent events.
